Good idea this, Mike :)
Of your eight my preferred are Cash's Hurt and Beethoven's 7th, I've sent my eight off to The Beeb and also put them on my blog.
Cheers

I was trying to think which recording I like where the second movement is slower - I think it may be an old Klemperor recording. The Gymnopodies are also marked for a faster tempo than I prefer.

I remember "Crown Court" from home-dinners days, but had forgotten they used Sinfonietta for the theme music. It was one of the first pieces my brother studied at music college, and I loved it as soon as I heard it.

Karajan was quite unusual for his generation in taking the second movement of the 7th symphony at a relatively fast tempo. Beethoven specified “allegretto”, but I think conductors of an older generation generally took “allegretto” to be considerably slower than most contemporary conductors, influenced by period performance practice, would take it. Either that, or they thought Beethoven was wrong about his own music! Most of the older performances I hear on recordings take this movement at what sounds to my ears more like an andante – or sometimes even an adagio… I must say, I like it at the tempo Karajan takes it at. (Toscanini was another conductor of an older generation who took at at a relatively fast tempo.)

Do you remember the courtroom drama they used to have on ITV daytime called “Crown Court”? They used the 4th movement of Janacek’s Sinfonietta as their theme music. Every time I hear the Sinfonietta, I am reminded of my school holdays.

Thanks Gareth. I have this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Summa-Festina-Lente-S-Part/dp/B0000264NG which has many of the same pieces (Cantus In Memory of Benjamin Britten is another favourite of mine). I can't remember off the top of my head if Summa is in "the saddest of all keys", but it sounds like it might be.

I know what you mean about Satie, but I think that's part of the appeal - the joyous amateurishness - reminds me a bit of the paintings of Henri Rousseau. Sort of crude, but with a not-trying-to-be-what-it-isn't integrity. And so quirky & different to anything else you can think of (except for later imitations, of course). I love the Gnossiennes too.

Nice list, Mike. Your classical choices are very pleasing. I love Pärt's Summa (a.k.a. Lick My Love Pump) - a marvellous piece. I don't know if you know this album, but it contains a good and varied selection of his music, excellently performed, and it's one I listen to a lot.

When I hear Satie's music I sometimes find myself baffled by his continuing endurance. So much of what he wrote betrays a kind of amateurishness. And yet in the Gymnopedies and the Gnossiennes among other things, there is music that is quite remarkable and like nothing else that had been written before (but has obviously been much imitated since). I think the second Gymnopedie may be my favourite too, or the third.

I agree, I really liked this issue of Crimewave. To test the waters (and contain the budget) I had a suscription to Interzone last year and this year to Crimewave. In general, the good to bad ratio of stories favours Crimewave up till now.

I also agree with your choices though I prefer Plainview to Wilkolak mostly due to the prose. We Are Two Lions - though enjoyable - was indeed the lesser of the crop. The student wanting to conquer the master assassin idea is a much trodden path and the homosexual relationship didn't succeed in elevating this approach and felt a bit like exploitation, tacked on to spice it up.
